Attention: Student Feature

Resident wonder-student Kye Shi stands out at Monte Vista Christian for more reasons than having the highest GPA and SAT score in the junior class. Originating from Shanghai, China, Shi has become well-known for his creativity. If having a 3D printer in his dorm room isn't cool enough, he designed a pulley system to turn the light switch on and off from his bed. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Kye Shi.

Why do you have a 3D printer in your dorm room?
"I like 3D printing, I like to design and make things for fun, I did not want to rely on and wait for a school 3D printer, so I bought one for myself."

How long did it take you to create an alternative and easier way to turn off your lights at night?

"The idea occurred to me the first night of sophomore year when I didn't want to get off my bed to turn lights off. My first ideas involved straws and were unsuccessful. I later bought pulleys. Finally, I designed and printed my own pulleys over summer."

How was your experience on your Haiti trip?
"Interesting and dusty. It made me glad and content with my living conditions, happy to have a home with sanitation and water supply."

Do you play any sports?
"I am the best in school at table tennis, and have participated in city-wide competitions. I am also decent at pool and I am learning how to play golf as of last week."

How does it feel having the school’s top junior GPA?
"Says who I am rank 1? My reputation precedes me, it seems.
Regardless, the attention and the compliments tend to be amusing and sometimes encouraging. Occasionally, i.e. too often, they become all too encouraging and make me forget that I have limitations. Oops. It is fun to be complimented, but it is likewise in my best interest to ignore whatever compliments are sent my way--lest I fall prey to arrogance and carelessness."
