All FOr a Modest Dress Code

By Macie Saldate

Along with being properly dressed, the students are expected to have a modest attitude as well. This means having limitations with the use of PDA (public display of affection), inappropriate language, and more. Although some students find these limitations too harsh, I believe that they are reasonable because there is no reason to display a negative attitude in a school setting. Negativity spreads fast, so if students keep a positive attitude then there will be a positive environment at school.

According to the MVC handbook, the school “stresses the Biblical standard of modesty (1 Timothy 2:9, Romans 12:1), the expectation of a neat and clean appearance, and a Christ-like attitude. Student manner of dress should not detract from the school’s mission and values.”

School dress codes vary depending on the preferences of each school. Monte Vista Christian prides itself on being a college prep school, so the students are expected to reflect a college prep appearance. We as students, should want to present ourselves in an appropriate and mature way.

"By following the dress code, students should be presented as modest," said Edie Larson, the school's Dean of Students. "That is our main goal."

The dress code does not allow items such as slippers, sweats, any ripped or see through clothing, and more. The dress code permits clothing that is modest and fits properly. Although some disagree with the limitations, many students and parents support the dress code.

“I think the dress code is fine. They aren’t asking anything ridiculous of us,” said senior, Molly Pedulla. “They like the students to look professional.”

There have been complaints from students and parents that many students out of dress code don't receive consequences. This is due to many teachers not enforcing the dress code like they should. To keep up this modest image, more teachers need to enforce the rules rather than letting it slide and waiting for someone else to address it. The more students that follow the dress code, the more modest and mature they will look, which will reflect positively on the school.

Spring Fashion

By Abigail Acosta

When I think of spring I think of being a little girl running through the sprinklers in my white flower sandals. As time goes on we grow and things change, but one thing that doesn’t change about spring is the fact that we get to shed the winter layers and put on some lighter fashion. Your fashion guardian angel has arrived, here to inform and initiate you on great spring looks.

This is the best time of year for you, ladies. Pull out your favorite sandals that have a little white flower that reminds you of being a little girl running through the sprinklers. You have upgraded from the sprinklers to the stores and in exchange for the dark colors from winter, pull

out your yellows, whites, and baby blues.

You can get your best looks at any of your local stores. The best look for spring is a light colored dress that flaunts your aspects and makes you feel confident. For shoes all you need are a little pair of sandals with that cute pedi you know you just got done.

Maddie Lagan says, “I think one of my favorite things about spring is that you can go from dark lipsticks to bright ones like oranges.”

Add some accessories to spice things up. A nice sun hat never hurts. Also a must have: Cute but simple gold or silver bracelets, whichever one matches your outfit the most. Then make sure the earrings you wear are the

same as your braceletes, never wear gold with silver, keep it gold and gold or silver and silver. Now you are ready grab a purse and take on the day.

Now guys, we did not forget about you. This is a great time of year for you too because you’re going to want to show off your legs when you don’t have that embarrassing football tan. Despite what some people think, now is the time for you to wear flip flops.

Peter Melrose says, “I think cuffed jeans and hipster boots are a popular look.”

You can pull them off as long as you are confident and wear them with the right things. If you’re a typical guy you’re most likely sitting there reading this and wondering what you’re supposed to wear with flip flops. The main thing you must always remember gentlemen Fashion over function. You can wear flip flops with whatever.

However, the best spring look for you is going to be those flip flops with a pair of shorts and a nice casual button up shirt, particularly a shirt with something tropical on it like palm trees, or at least make sure the shirt is lightly colored. For pete's sake, ditch the black and navy blues, do it for the season. Guys, you can own fashion just like the girls. You just have to try.

For the past 15 years, American Idol has created multiple Grammy award singers. The showhas been a powerhouse for Fox primetime television.

Yet, as ratings have fallen, and with so many other talent shows now airing, the network has decided to discontinue the show.

American Idol first aired on June 11, 2002, and up until the last three years, the show has

produced excellent material, such as Simon Cowells rude but memorable comments on the open auditions.  With the show ranking 30th during its first season, and quickly climbing up to the No. 1 spot for consecutive years, there's no doubt that American Idol molded multiple stars.

“I’m so focused on this year, I can’t even think about that,” judge Harry Connick Jr. “I really can’t. We are so excited about the talent this year. I’m so happy right now I couldn’t even tell you what’s going to happen two years from now,” recorded EW.com.

The show has produced multiple billboard ranking singers, that you see or hear all around the world in modern music.

Season one winner, Kelly Clarkson, won a 58% vote over her competition, and Justin Guarini, and Clarkson later signed to RCA records. Season four winner, Carrie Underwood, may be the most famous Idol winner throughout the 15 seasons. Other Idol winners include Jordin Sparks, Scotty McCreery, Clay Aiken, and Taylor Hicks.

Monte Vista Alumni Jesaiah Baer recently auditioned for American Idol with judges Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj. While Baer was auditioning, something happened that she will remember forever. Watch her video here.

American Idol has received multiple hate remarks on the show’s “bad taste, and terrible judging."

“This season sucks!!! The contestants have vocals, although the judges are misjudging but that's not unusual. Does everyone have cotton in their ears?” said des1sing1 on TV.com.

American idol has continuously produced excellent singers. Will this really be the final season?

Day Student Feature - Jordan Marquez

By Jenny Wang

Lifestyle Writer

chenlingwang@students.mvcs.org

Monte Vista Christian junior Jordan Marquez has a warm smile that can capture a person’s attention. But that isn’t the only thing he captures. As the lead Man on the Street chapel video producer, he also captures student opinions and thoughts and presents them to the school in artistic, creative snapshots. The Vista talked with Marquez recently to learn more about the guy behind the smile and the films.

Why did you come to MVC?

"I came to this school not only for it's academics and environment, but also for the ability to freely express my faith along with others who share the same beliefs."

Why do you like to make videos?

"I enjoy making Man on the Street/Documentary-esque videos, especially ones that are moving and make the audience reflect on their own lives, although I really enjoy attempting new genres I'm not used to. Overall, the main reason why I enjoy making videos is the audience's enjoyment. If someone watching the video is happy, then I'm happy too."

What are your other hobbies beside making videos?

"I love sitting down in my room and making music."

What do you want to study in college?

"I'm planning on studying engineering, specifically biomedical."

Do you plan on making videos in college?

"Yeah, but maybe just as a hobby."

What made you start creating videos?

"There really wasn't anything that influenced me to start. One day I just came up with an idea and told myself, "Hey, I should try and make that."

With taking so many videos of other people, would you want to be in the videos some day? If yes, what kind of video would you want to be in?

"Of course, but it's hard finding someone who is motivated about the same project as you are, especially someone who has decent camera operating chops. If I find someone, I would definitely be part of the film."

Teacher Feature - Hannah Waiters

By Kyla McCartney

kylamccartney@students.mvcs.org

Monte Vista Christian is a school where students are told and taught that God has a purpose for each of their lives, but most of the time, students have difficulty understanding what this purpose looks like. Students are blessed to be sharing the campus with one of God's disciples.  Placed right in the biology classroom at MVC, Ms. Hannah Waiters is God's example of how His purpose is sought after and revealed.

Before coming to MVC as a long-term substitute in the middle school, Ms. Waiters said she never thought of being a teacher. She worked for the government for seven years as a lab technician.  Aside from her government job, she also helped children in family shelters, and was involved in Big Brothers, Big Sisters.  It was through these activities outside of her job that she realized she really liked kids and was led to serve them.

We got to know more about this disciple of Christ recently.

What is the biggest impact God has had on your life?

“I had this really big, elaborate plan for myself to be really rich and to drive a really nice car and to live in a really nice neighborhood. I only wanted money to make a good image of me.  When I was young, I didn't care that much about people, and I didn't care to be like Christ.  I said those things, but I did not feel that at all.  I just wanted a title, and to make myself as big as possible.  It took me to when I was about 22 or 23 years-old to realize that life is not about me.  When He told me to just let go of the job and the title, and to just do what God was asking me to do, those things will be given to you in time.  His biggest impact is when he called onto me to let me know that I am here to serve and be a disciple.”

What is the most challenging part about being a teacher?

"There's a lot of kids to manage, and it's challenging to have to see one hundred kids for only 30 or 40 minutes a day, when I want to motivate them and have them know that they can come and talk to me."

What do you love most about teaching?

"I just love my kids, and how everyday they teach me something new.  I just also love how funny and loving they are."

Where did you grow up?

"I grew up in Redwood City, California.  I went to a charter school for high school, and then went to UCSC."

What was your favorite high school memory?

"We had an annual high school camping trip where we did arts and crafts, cook together, have a talent show together, and the olympics. Those trips were by far my favorite."

Do you have any role models that you look up to?

"My dad. He has always demonstrated having faith no matter what, and being able to watch him and his faith consistently grow has always been huge for me."

When did you become a Christian?

"I grew up in the Christian faith. However, when I felt that I was really saved was around 21."

What advice do you give to high schoolers as they go through high school and transition to their next step in life after high school?

"Know that you are incredible and that you have Christ behind you.  Be proud of who you are and where you are going, because you’re going to go somewhere amazing."

What do you like to do for fun?

"I love rock climbing."

If you could meet one person from the past who would it be?

"Dr. King."

Courage by Rafael Gomez

The instant my hand falls on my lap I feel a tremble,

An earthquake is rumbling all through my body.

All of my limbs shaking like I am in the Arctic,

For I am so fear-stricken in this moment of terror.

Dread grows through every square inch of my body,

and takes a tight hold on my heart,

Pound, pound, pound, louder and louder, as a drummer in a marching band.

My heart's pounding grows so loud my ears ache.

A solitary droplet of sweat trickles down my forehead,

And I feel the sting of it as the salty drop makes contact with my eye.

All these symptoms come together like a horrible sickness.

That is exactly what fear is,

a disease that temporarily takes control of the mind and body, with only one cure

Courage.

Rain by Amelia Ayers

Dark clouds rumble in.

Water pours from the grey sky.

The rain pitter-patters on my bright umbrella,

The wind whispers in my ear.

The rain is silenced by a crack of lightning like a crying child hushed it’s mother.

The tar-black clouds roll away and the plush white clouds float in.

Crystal blue sky shines with the golden sun,

The air is still crisp with scent of the fallen rain

Dew on the branches of the plants dry up.

The warm yellow sun shines once again .

But will the rain ever come again?

Innocence

Innocence,

Roaming around like a poet,

Who embraces and extols every beauty

That wraps itself in simplicity.

The wind that frees the dandelions to blossom

When the breeze in spring is swishing

And swaying the lush grasses.

The dandelions that blossom

When the breeze in spring is swishing

And swaying the lush grasses.

The carousels that enchant the childish one,

The flying carpet that can carry them

To an iridescent rainbow in their nebulous dream.

And the dazzling sun,

That bursts in the sullen and ashen sky

To dispel the dreariness.
