WATSONVILLE -- A 16-year-old Aptos High School student was ticketed and suspended on Friday afternoon for threatening social media posts he made against both his school and Monte Vista Christian School earlier in the week.

Law enforcement tracked the student by searching the IP address records of Silicon Valley-based Ogle, a mobile application that allows users to make anonymous posts relating to their school campuses.

The offender's name was withheld because he is a minor.

The teen was reportedly apologetic when interviewed by the police, and claimed the post was just meant as a joke.

“We would like our students to know that nothing is ever really anonymous,” Monte Vista High School Principal Steve Woods said.

Teachers at Monte Vista addressed the falsehood of online anonymity during their Monday classes in the week following the incident and urged students to take a stand against using the app in harmful ways.

Originally designed as a way for students to connect with their campus community throughout the day, Ogle has also been a venue for cyberbullying and explicit content.
