WATSONVILLE -- The Monte Vista Christian girls soccer team had a memorable senior night on Friday, Feb. 12, but it wasn’t enough for the Mustangs to make the playoffs after a rough first year in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division.

Junior Lauren Winkler scored in the first half and senior Alyna Tunink scored off of a header in the second half as MVC beat Gilroy 2-0 on their senior night. The Mustangs have suffered close losses all season, including a 1-0 loss to Hollister two days before on a last-minute goal. But not on this night.

“The whole night was perfect” senior captain Hayley Velocci said. “The best part was the ceremony and seeing all the support from my friends.”

The Mustangs (6-8-4 overall, 3-6-3 league) moved from the Pacific Division to the Gabilan this year.

The seniors have had a tough season, so they said they loved that their classmates came and supported them at their last home game as Mustangs.

Graduating seniors include: Haley Velocci, Nicole Sotero, Zephone Lew, Alyna Tunink, Katie Schmitzer, and Marin Torr.

“We are in a good league and it just hasn’t worked out the way we wanted it to,” said senior Zephone Lew said. “But it is nice to get a win on our senior night.”

The girls soccer senior night came out with a win on Friday, Feb. 12. Although they won the game, the girls will not make the playoffs after playing in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division for their first time.
